Sorry Chocolate Lovers...Acid reflux occurs when the lower esophageal sphincter (the circularmuscle that acts as a gate between the esophagus and stomach) loosens too easily or does not maintain its tone. This loosening allows caustic gastric acid to backwash into the esophagus, causing difficulty swallowing, wheezing, shortness of breath, persistent dry cough, hoarseness, and the feeling that you have a lump in your throat (Health.USnews).

There are many causes for acid reflux, primarily dietary.

Unlucky for chocolate lovers. If you love chocolate and also suffer from acid reflux, you may have found the culprit.

Chocolate is at the top of the list of foods that cause acid reflux.

But why?

1. Chocolate contains methylxanthine, caffeine and other stimulants such as theobromine, which cause reflux.

2. Chocolate is high in fat, and fat causes reflux.

3. Chocolate is also high in cocoa, and cocoa causes reflux.

If you MUST have that little fix, dark chocolate is a better option than high-fat milk chocolate (Health.com)
