Summer Superfoods - 7 Ways LEMON Can Boost Your Summer Health & Beauty Regimen
Summer is here! This is the season to keep your eating clean and body healthy, which is why we recommend stocking up on citrus...lemons to be specific.
Lemons are one of nature's most versatile superfoods, comprised of compounds that can do everything from boost your immune system to clean your kitchen counter. And for those of us looking for a healthy boost to our summer - whether it means hitting the road for tour or hitting the beach - lemons are essential for keeping your voice and bikini-body in check.
Here are seven reasons lemons should be a part of your summer diet:

Lemons are packed full of vitamins and compounds that possess antibacterial, antiviral, antioxidant, and immune-boosting properties.[/caption]
1. Fight Voice-Harming Infections
Lemon's natural antibiotic properties make the citrus fruit a natural remedy to fight infections that can directly effect your voice, throat, and upper respiratory system. Keeping lemon on-hand, particularly if your summer plans include touring, is a great natural defense to viruses and bacteria.

Upper respiratory infections are viral or bacterial infections effecting the upper respiratory system including the larynx, trachea, and sinuses. Add fresh lemons and a touch of raw honey to boost the antiviral properties of your hot tea, which also helps to hydrate your system.[/caption]
2. Boost Immune System with Vitamin C
In addition to its antibacterial properties, lemon is rich in vitamin C, which will help boost your immune system to help fight off a summer buzz-killing infection that can wreak havoc on your pipes (and ruin your day at the beach).
Vitamin C is a vital part of a healthy diet. Vitamin C is a natural antioxidant, which means it helps to fight off cell-damaging free radicals that can speed up the aging process and lead to debilitating diseases such as cancer or Alzheimers. And after all that time in the sun, fighting the aging process should be at the top of your agenda!

A 100-gram serving (two small lemons) of lemon provides contains 53 milligrams of vitamin -88% of the daily recommended 60 milligrams.[/caption]
3. Weight Loss
Drinking water has been a proven metabolism-booster and vital for any diet regimen, but adding lemon to your water can help kick your weight-loss into the next gear for a few reasons. The first being that adding a bit of flavor to your water can make it easier to hit your daily water intake goal - especially for those of us who absolutely cringe at the thought of drinking eight full glasses of boring water every day. Hitting your water goal will not only help to speed your metabolism, but the fiber content in lemon will also make you feel fuller (so be sure to put in full wedges or slices of lemon over just the juice). If you feel a bit peckish in the middle of the day, drink a full glass of water with lemon and you will find your untimely food craving more manageable.
Drinking water with lemon can also reduce bloating, which is a major bonus during the summer. Lemon is a natural diuretic, which will help calm bloating and act as a natural detox.

Drinking an 8 oz glass of lemon water first thing in the morning will not only give you an AM energy boost, but also activate your body's natural detoxifying process. Both are essential to maintaining your weight-loss goals.[/caption]
4. A Glowing Complexion
Lemons' antibacterial and antifungal properties are why this super citrus is an amazing natural toner and cleanser. Use a touch of lemon juice to clear up acne, blackheads, or even out oily skin.

Lemons are a natural skin cleanser, but not recommended if your skin is dry. Use a touch of lemon juice to clear up oily areas or to help clear up blackheads or acne.[/caption]
If you have dark spots, dark circles, or uneven skin tones, the citric acid in lemon can help to even and brighten your overall skin tone. Apply lemon juice evenly over your face and follow with your daily moisturizer.
5. Whiten Your Smile
Especially if you use your voice for a living, your smile is one of your most important features.
Forget those expensive treatments, all you need to whiten your teeth is probably sitting in your kitchen right now. Mix about a tablespoon of baking soda with enough lemon juice to create a thin paste and spread across your teeth with a Q-tip or toothbrush dedicated to whitening. Leave the mixture on for 90-seconds and rinse. Do this every night before bed and your teeth (and wallet) will thank you!

Be sure not to leave the mixture on your teeth for too long, as the citric acid in lemon can also eat away the enamel on your teeth.[/caption]
6. Soothe Chapped Lips
Your lips are too often overlooked. We take the time to exfoliate and moisturize the rest of our body, but why not our lips? Combine the juice from one lemon with 1/2 cup of sugar to create a natural lip treatment. The sugar will exfoliate the lips and let the antibacterial properties in the lemon go to work striping away the dead skin. After rubbing this exfoliating combo, smooth on your favorite chap stick and wake up with soft, supple lips. This is also a great way to prep your lips for lipstick!
7. Boost Energy
Summer is all about being active, so keeping your energy levels up is priority number one--especially if you are on tour or have a busy summer event calendar. Lemon is a proven natural energy-booster and can also maximize your mental clarity. We recommend starting your day with an invigorating lemon body scrub.
DIY LEMON BODY SCRUB
1 Cup White Sugar
1/4 Cup Olive Oil
1/4 Cup Honey
10 Drops Lemon Oil
1 TBSP Baking Soda
[caption id="attachment_81591" align="aligncenter" width="470"]
Add in different essential oils to create different sugar scrubs. Discontinue use if your skin becomes irritated as essential oil can be drying. Try decreasing the amount of oil if your find your skin is becoming dry or irritated.[/caption]
Mix all the ingredients together and store in a water-tight container. Keep the mixture in your shower and use first thing in the morning. The aroma from essential lemon oil will give your mind and body a natural boost, and the combination of cleansing lemon and moisturizing olive oil and honey will also leave your skin clean, bright, and smooth!
