TIPS FROM THE PROS- BRANDON WHALEN OF MY BODY SINGS ELECTRIC
Take it from the pros--warming up your voice is the key to maintaining your pipes on the road.
We caught up with My Body Sings Electric vocalist Brandon Whalen and idobi Radio personality to get his advice on how to maintain your professional vocals throughout a rigorous tour schedule and long stints in the studio.

How long have you been performing and singing?
BW: I started singing and writing songs when I was a junior in high school, and then progressed into playing in bands while I was in college. That gives me about 10 years of singing under my belt by now.
What do you do to keep your vocals healthy on show days and non-show days? Or do you?
BW: A healthy voice starts with healthy lifestyle. Regardless of my show schedule I exercise several times a week, drink lots of water and stay away from bad food.
When I'm on the road I focus on trying to stay rested and hydrated. Sometimes that means going to bed early while your bandmates are up having fun. Keep in mind your body is your instrument and it requires special care to be able to endure a touring schedule.
Before every show I take 30 minutes to warm up. Get familiar with some vocal warmup routines that allow you to gently stretch your voice on the high and low end. Find a quiet place before your gig and go through the routine. It will help you hit notes with less effort and more accuracy and you'll feel less voice fatigue at the end of the show.
What do you do for your vocal warm up?
BW: I do two routines before each show.
One is what I like to call the raspberry roller coaster. You press your lips together and make a "brrrtt" noise. Start low in your register and gently roll your voice up all the way to your falsetto highs. Then come back down from the high yawn end toward your low end.
The other warmup I love to do is a humming exercise that focuses on moving from chest voice to head voice to falsetto and back. I hum the root note of a chord then do a smooth circle up to the fifth of that root note and back. I start at C and move all the way up my guitar to a high E and back down to the C an octave below where I started. The point of this exercise is to concentrate on your "breaks" between voice registers. It allows you to get into your head voice more comfortably and to become familiar with moving between all of your vocal registers.
Any tricks of the trade you can share with us on how you keep your voice healthy?
BW: Here are a few of my favorites:
1. Become great at warming up.
2. Sing everyday.
3. Study your skill and always look for ways to improve.
4. HAVE FUN!
Any news about your band we should know?
BW: We are scheduled to head out on tour with Andrew McMahon of Jack's Mannequin and Something Corporate in July. Then this fall we get to play Riot Fest (one of the biggest festivals of the year) and then we will follow that up with an east coast tour.
